  • Links have been added below wherever possible, but most of Erie County's vital or original records are offline. They are still on paper or microfilm, usually in government offices.  This will not change soon.
  • No repository listed below can guarantee access or results when searching for records from any time period. In some cases, search fees and privacy restrictions may apply. There may not be staff available for all kinds of searches.
  • Vital records (births, marriages, deaths) are not subject to the provisions of the Freedom of Information Law (FOIL) and are not open to public inspection. Meaning: you cannot demand to see the records yourself the way you can read the census yourself. An official must do it.
  • When dealing with vital records clerks and other officials, you may have better results if you state in advance that your interest in a particular record is for genealogical purposes only.
History of Birth, Marriage, and Death Records in New York State

Up to 1879 1880-1914 1914 to present
No statewide vital records law exists. A few cities & towns have a (very) few mid-19th century vital records. Researchers usually have to use church records instead. First statewide vital records law passed in 1880, but Albany does not collect copies from Buffalo or Yonkers. Compliance is uneven. In Buffalo, surviving records are not comprehensive. Vital records law is changed and all municipalities send copies to Albany. Records should be comprehensive.  However, privacy restrictions still apply.
